What we collect
Messages you send us
When you use the contact form, we receive your name, email address, the topic you choose, your organization if you give one, and your message. We use them only to read and answer your message, whether it’s a manuscript request, an interview inquiry, or a note from a reader. We don’t add you to a mailing list or use your details for marketing.
Basic technical information
Like nearly every website, our web host automatically records basic technical information when your browser asks for a page: your IP address, browser type, the page requested, the page that linked you here, and the time. It is used only to deliver the site and keep it secure, and the host keeps it for a limited time. We don’t use it to identify you.
That’s all. The site has no accounts, newsletter, comments, or payments, and it doesn’t use analytics or advertising.
Cookies and local storage
This site uses only essential cookies and storage: nothing for analytics, advertising, or tracking, and no third-party scripts. Its fonts are hosted on the site itself, so reading a page doesn’t contact Google or any other outside service.
- Cookie notice. An entry named “cookie-notice” in your browser’s local storage remembers that you closed the cookie notice, so it doesn’t reappear on every page. It holds no personal information, is never sent to us, and stays until you clear your browser data.
- Security cookies from our web host. Our host may set strictly necessary cookies to protect the site from abuse and deliver pages reliably. They don’t track you across other websites.
Strictly necessary storage like this doesn’t require consent under the EU and UK cookie rules, so the notice is there to inform you, not to ask. You can still block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the site will keep working. If we ever add analytics or anything else that uses non-essential cookies, we will update this policy and ask for your permission first.
Who we share it with
We don’t sell or rent your information, and we don’t share it for advertising. It is shared only with:
- the companies that host this website and deliver contact-form messages to us, which handle it on our behalf and only to provide those services; and
- authorities, when the law requires it.
Links to other websites
This site links to LinkedIn, Goodreads, and Amazon. Those sites have their own privacy policies and cookies, which apply once you follow a link there.
How long we keep it
We keep your messages for as long as we need them to answer you and handle any follow-up, then delete them. Our host keeps its server logs for a limited time for security.
Your rights
You can ask us at any time to show you, correct, or delete the information we hold about you, which is usually just the messages you’ve sent. We honor these requests wherever you live.
Depending on where you live, you may have further rights. In the EU and UK, we rely on our legitimate interest in answering the messages you send and keeping the site secure; you can object to that, and you can complain to your data protection authority. In California and other US states with privacy laws, you have the right to know, correct, and delete your information. We don’t sell or share personal information as those laws define it, and we won’t treat you differently for using your rights.
Children
This site is meant for adults: readers, literary agents, publishers, and the press. It isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, contact us and we’ll delete it.
Security
The site is served over an encrypted connection (HTTPS), and only Arlene and anyone helping her run the site can read your messages. No way of sending or storing information online is completely secure, so please don’t send sensitive personal information through the contact form.
Visitors outside the United States
We’re based in the United States, and the information described here is stored and processed there.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
